The Thai marriage system in plain English
A marriage in Thailand is registered at the amphur (district office). Once registered, the marriage exists in Thai law from that moment — there is no ceremony requirement, no minimum residency, and no waiting period. The Thai system separates the legal act (the amphur) from any religious or social ceremony, which is why many couples hold their wedding ceremony anywhere they like and only handle the legal registration on a quiet weekday. For a foreigner, the only complication is that the amphur officer must see proof from the foreigner's home embassy that the foreigner is legally free to marry. This is the Affirmation of Freedom to Marry — a one-page document the embassy in Bangkok issues after you appear in person and sign. Once translated into Thai and legalized at MFA, it unlocks the entire amphur process.
